More Info…

  • Dyeing Under the Influence is a small family side hustle that we have a lot of fun doing and hope to grow into a much bigger business.

  • Ebru is a traditional Turkish form of "painting on water" that has been around since the 13th century. Ebru marbled papers have been used as backgrounds for calligraphy, religious texts, and as the end pages in old books. More information about the history of Ebru can be found here: https://www.doebru.com/blog-post/types-of-marbling

We create these designs by floating thinned acrylic paints onto a gelatinous surface (water thickened with methylcellulose - water-soluble polymers derived from cellulose) in different sized "stones", or drops of paint. These drops expand on the water surface and can be styled using different tools like toothpicks and rakes. Then we lay a silk or other fabric that has been treated with alum (to help fix the pigment) onto the surface to pick up the design. Fabrics are then heat treated with an iron and hand-washed to remove any remaining residue.

  • It’s not necessary to be under the influence while dyeing! Dyeing is heaps of fun stone sober — but for some, being a bit tipsy might help get those creative juices flowing.
